Iqaluit, NU (June 16, 2026) – On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) appeared in the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit and entered a guilty plea to one offence under the Nunavut Safety Act.
QEC pleaded guilty to a single count that it “did fail to take all reasonable precautions and adopt and carry out all reasonable techniques and procedures, to ensure the health and safety of every person in its establishment”, contrary to the Safety Act.
The charges are in relation to an incident that occurred on July 5, 2024 at the Naujaat Power Plant that resulted in the death of a worker.
In passing sentence, the court imposed a fine of $240,000 to be paid to the Workers’ Protection Fund, plus a Victim Fine Surcharge of $36,000.
Following an investigation, the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) filed nine charges against QEC on June 26, 2025. The remaining charges were withdrawn in accordance with a plea agreement.
