Media Release: WSCC awards funding to expand access to workplace safety education

Yellowknife, NT / Iqaluit, NU (November 13, 2025) – The Workers’ Safety & Compensation Commission (WSCC) is pleased to announce the projects selected for funding under the Occupational Health and Safety Funding Program for 2026.

A total of just over $1M will provide funding to five organizations to help reduce work-related injuries and illnesses through education, capacity building, and training initiatives.

ilinniapaa Skills Development Centre

Expanding Standard First Aid OHS Capacity in Nunavut

This project will provide training to people in Kivalliq region, prioritizing Inuit employers, workers, youth, and community members with limited resources. It will deliver two WSCC-approved Standard First Aid training events in each community for a total of 12 sessions to certify participants in essential emergency response skills.

Advanced Medical SolutionsFirst Aid Instructor DevelopmentTwo First Aid Instructor Development courses will be held in Yellowknife and Iqaluit, each certifying six participants from 5 Northwest Territories communities, and 3 Nunavut communities. This will expand capacity for Standard First Aid training across the North.NT: Inuvik, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells, Yellowknife, and Hay River

Arctic Energy AllianceChainsaw SafetyThis initiative provides in-person Firewood Safety Courses (including Chain Saw Level 3 with Felling Component) to people in three NWT communities.Behchokǫ̀, Inuvik, Fort Smith
Arctic ResponseOHS Training Bootcamp    Provides workers in small communities across the North a condensed training timeline for legally required safety courses, including Supervisor Safety Training, Joint OHS Committee Training, Confined Spaces, Fall Protection, Spill Response Level 2, and H2S Alive.Employers and workers in small communities across both territories.
Northern Safety AssociationImproving Access to COR® Certification for EmployersExpanded access and delivery of the Certificate of Recognition Program (COR ®) to employers and workers across the North by updating and modernizing auditing tools and online learning options.Employers in all industries across both territories.
Northern Safety AssociationModernizing Safety Training for Online and In-Class Delivery    Redesign and modernize over 30 safety courses, both online and in-class, to reduce training barriers for all workers across the North. This will also include developing new courses in partnership with the WSCC in response to industry demand, increasing workplace safety.Employers and workers across both territories.
