Iqaluit, NU (July 3, 2025) – On June 26, 2025, the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission filed nine charges against Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) in the Nunavut Court of Justice under the Safety Act.
The charges are in relation to an incident that occurred on July 5, 2024 at the Naujaat Power Plant that resulted in the death of a worker.
Following the completion of an investigation by WSCC Safety Officers, QEC is charged with multiple counts alleging violations of the Safety Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (Nunavut), including failing to take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of every person at the worksite, failing to sufficiently and competently supervise work, and failing to implement safe work procedures, as well as other offences.
The first court appearance is scheduled for August 11, 2025, in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

2. The Safety Act, section 11, outlines requirements for confidentiality relating to what personal information the WSCC can release. The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act also states what personal information government bodies are permitted to release. Under these Acts, the WSCC is unable to disclose personal information or information that could reasonably identify an individual.
