Media Release: The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission Lay Charges under the Mine Health & Safety Act

1st Dec 2021

Yellowknife, NT (December 01, 2021) – On November 10, 2021 the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission filed nine charges in the Northwest Territories’ Territorial Court under the Northwest Territories’ Mine Health & Safety Act.

Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. is charged with multiple counts alleging various offences in violation of the Mine Health & Safety Act, including failing to take every reasonable measure and precaution to protect the health and safety of employees and ensuring that all supervisors are properly trained in safe work and safe blasting procedures.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on November 16, 2020 when a worker was injured when a slab of rock fell on the excavator machine he was operating. He was attempting to move rock after a blast.

Charged are Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., the mine manager, the blasting supervisor, and the supervisor/shift boss.

The first court appearance in this matter is scheduled for January 18, 2022.
