Media Release: North West Company LP sentenced for offences under the Northwest Territories' Safety Act

Yellowknife, NT (January 28, 2019) – On January 17, 2019, the North West Company LP appeared in the Territorial Court of the Northwest Territories in Fort Resolution and was sentenced for offences under the Northwest Territories’ Safety Act.

The Prosecutor and Counsel for the North West Company LP presented a joint submission on sentence which was accepted by the presiding Judge. The North West Company LP was sentenced to fines totalling $35,000, which is paid to the Workers’ Protection Fund. In addition, 15% victim of fine surcharges were imposed.

Employers are legally responsible to take every reasonable precaution for the health and safety of workers. This includes ensuring all workers and supervisors receive training and instruction necessary to ensure the safety of workers and the worksite, and to have and maintain an occupational health and safety program that is current and relevant to the potential hazards at their worksite, including hazardous substances.
